Abstract
On occasion of the sixtieth anniversary of the founding of the Chilean Academy of Medicine, this article reviews some contributions and reactions of the institution to major changes that have occurred in Chile and the world in the sanitary and university fields in the intervening years. It starts with certain historical data of the foundation, then mentions the impact of the university reform and the period of delegated rectors. The article then refers to the greatre for mofhigher education and the seminars and debate sheldon medical education, with the creation of new universities and medical schools. The contributions of the Academy to the instances of teaching improvement in medicine, and to the participation in organizations for the evaluation and certification of the quality of medical and specialist studies, are also mentioned. It also re- ports on the state and perspectives of biomedical research in the country and the international relations of the Academy. Finally, it refers to reflections on medicine raised within it and to opinions expressed on the changes in biomedicine that have had the greatest impact on society beyond the biomedical field.
