Abstract

Death with a functioning kidney is an important cause of long-term graft loss. This paper anal- yses its causes, prevention and management. It concludes:

  1. Mortality after Tx is mainly cardiovascular(CV), followed by infections and third cancer.

  2. There are specific CV risk factors in this population that should be investigated and treated.

  3. Diabetes Mellitus post Tx is multifactorial, frequent and is associated with graft dysfunction and recipient death.

  4. Certain types of cancer are more common in this population and mortality rates are higher and individual screening programs should be established for this type of patients and the clinical recommendations of clinical guidelines should be followed.
